You obviously have no prayer of managing to do so on any substantive terms!

Not to mention, you're of course dead wrong. No one would misconstrue this as Bush being dumb (though he certainly is). Rather, it's the contrast of someone unknowledgable in an area being forced to have a conversation with an expert, and would work in any such context. You could substitute Hillary Clinton for Bush in that picture and the joke would work the same.

The most amusing thing of all is how much you hate Krugman! And the lengths you have to go to think yourself getting a punch in on him. :)RNnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-72496436107774682782008-12-20T12:45:00.000-06:002008-12-20T12:45:00.000-06:00Jeez falkenstein, take a joke. OTOH the clown standing next to him turned this once great country and mighty economy into a joke. well that's just not funny.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-41519385760745869212008-12-08T08:53:00.000-06:002008-12-08T08:53:00.000-06:00I don't see this as a self-deprecating joke, becau...I don't see this as a self-deprecating joke, because attributed to Krugman it isn't funny in any way.Eric Falkensteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07243687157322033496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-22537420919447526562008-12-08T02:23:00.000-06:002008-12-08T02:23:00.000-06:00I think some of the commenters are interpreting th...I think some of the commenters are interpreting the caption as being spoken by Krugman (that's how I read it at first too). But in reality it's meant to be interpreted as spoken by Bush - I think - which makes it essentially a Polak joke.

Still, maybe it's just a reflection of where I am on the political spectrum, but after eight years I think we're all entitled to a few Polak jokes at Bush's expense.

But what the picture most reminds me of is the SNL skit where Bush is endorsing McCain in the Oval Office and McCain is doing his best to distance himself in any way.Dangerhorsehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03915111190043111807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-23694774953291355092008-12-07T18:08:00.000-06:002008-12-07T18:08:00.000-06:00i concur with the other commenters, sameer in part...i concur with the other commenters, sameer in particular. you make some reasonable points, but your sense of humor deserted you here and you malign pk unfairly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-5031793813790316612008-12-07T11:26:00.000-06:002008-12-07T11:26:00.000-06:00dumb or not, it was funny. and i'd like to read a ...dumb or not, it was funny. and i'd like to read a post where you argue intelligently pro god and against evolution. I view it as Krugman poking fun at himsel...I agree. I view it as Krugman poking fun at himself. That he would ridicule Cheney for not knowing about Riemann integrals. Furthermore, if this is a caption for what Krugman is saying to Bush, then the implication is that Krugman is commiserating with Bush -- i.e. they are both laughing at how stupid Cheney is, which implies that Bush knows about Riemann integrals.Sameerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01632200421272528636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-11878068518823329412008-12-07T04:17:00.000-06:002008-12-07T04:17:00.000-06:00I also don't agree with your analysis of the joke....I also don't agree with your analysis of the joke. To me the humor is not that Bush is stupid, it's the idea that an egghead professor would set up such an obviously ridiculous standard for deciding someone is smart, i.e. that they have detailed technical knowledge of the professor's field. I think the humor is playing off the idea that Krugman (with his Nobel prize) is such an egghead professor.edhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01150091053740909530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7905515.post-85955845000692494822008-12-06T21:42:00.000-06:002008-12-06T21:42:00.000-06:00You seem to be reading a lot into it. Or maybe it's a joke at his own expense: the character in the caption can only talk or joke about math because that's all he knows.Frankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08251969034008210562noreply@blogger.com
